Yes. If you’ve received a diagnosis or repair recommendation from another repair shop or dealership, Chimney Rock Car Care can perform an independent evaluation and provide a second opinion. Depending on the concern, diagnostic testing may be required and diagnostic charges may apply. We focus on verifying the cause of the problem rather than simply replacing parts based on a trouble code or previous recommendation. Our goal is to give you the information you need to make an informed repair decision.

Check Engine Light & Diagnostic Questions

What does it mean when my check engine light comes on?

A check engine light means your vehicle’s computer has detected a problem that could affect engine performance, emissions, fuel economy, or another monitored system. The cause can range from something relatively simple to a more complex engine, fuel, ignition, or electrical problem. A trouble code provides a starting point, but it does not necessarily identify the failed part. At Chimney Rock Car Care in Houston, our check engine light diagnosis uses testing to determine why the warning light came on before we recommend repairs.

If your check engine light is on but the vehicle is running normally, it may be possible to drive it for a short time, but the problem should still be diagnosed soon. If the check engine light is flashing, the engine is running rough, the vehicle is losing power, or other warning lights appear, you should stop driving and have the vehicle inspected. A flashing check engine light can indicate a severe misfire that may damage the catalytic converter. Chimney Rock Car Care provides check engine light diagnosis in Houston to determine the cause of the warning light and what repairs, if any, are needed.

A flashing check engine light usually indicates a serious problem that needs immediate attention, often an active engine misfire. A misfire can be caused by problems such as a failing ignition coil or spark plug, fuel injector issue, vacuum or air leak, fuel delivery problem, wiring or electrical fault, or an internal engine problem. Continuing to drive with an active misfire can allow unburned fuel to enter the exhaust system and overheat or damage the catalytic converter. If the engine is shaking, running rough, losing power, or the check engine light is flashing, we recommend safely stopping the vehicle and having it diagnosed before continuing to drive.

Diagnostic time depends on the problem and the testing required. Some concerns can be identified relatively quickly, while intermittent electrical problems, complex drivability issues, or concerns involving multiple vehicle systems may require additional testing time. At Chimney Rock Car Care, our goal is to accurately identify the cause of the problem rather than rush through testing or replace parts based only on a trouble code. For your convenience, we offer complimentary shuttle service within 5 miles of our Houston auto repair shop, and loaner vehicles may also be available for repairs that require more time.

Chimney Rock Car Care diagnoses a wide range of vehicle problems, including check engine lights, misfires, electrical issues, starting and charging problems, overheating, A/C concerns, warning lights, drivability problems, fuel system issues, and other complex vehicle concerns. Depending on the problem, our technicians may use professional scan tools, lab scopes, digital multimeters, smoke testing equipment, pressure and vacuum testing, and other specialized diagnostic equipment to test the system and identify the cause of the problem. We focus on testing and verifying the failure before recommending repairs rather than replacing parts based solely on a trouble code.

No. A trouble code scan and a vehicle diagnosis are not the same thing. Think of a trouble code as giving you a ZIP code—it points us toward the general area of the problem. Proper diagnostic testing gives us the actual address by determining what has failed and why.

A trouble code may identify the system where the vehicle detected a problem, but it does not necessarily identify the failed part. Our technicians may need to analyze scan data, test electrical circuits and components, perform mechanical testing, or use other diagnostic equipment to verify the cause before recommending a repair.

Parts stores such as AutoZone and O’Reilly Auto Parts can scan your vehicle for trouble codes and may provide a printout showing a suggested repair or part. While that information can be a helpful starting point, it is not the same as diagnosing the vehicle. The suggested part is typically based on the trouble code and common repairs associated with that code, not testing that confirms the part has actually failed.

For example, a misfire code may lead to a suggested repair such as replacing a spark plug or ignition coil, but the code itself does not confirm that either part has failed. A misfire can also be caused by a fuel injector problem, vacuum or air leak, wiring or electrical fault, low compression or another mechanical engine problem, fuel delivery issue, or even an exhaust or catalytic converter problem. Diagnostic testing is needed to determine what is actually causing the cylinder to misfire.

At Chimney Rock Car Care, we use the trouble code as a starting point and perform the appropriate testing to determine the actual cause of the problem before recommending a repair. If you already have a code scan or printout from a parts store, bring it with you—it can be useful information for our technicians.
