Halloween brings costumes, candy, and excited children to Houston neighborhoods. Whether you’re taking your family trick-or-treating or simply driving home, a little extra preparation and patience can help everyone enjoy the evening safely.
At Chimney Rock Car Care, we encourage drivers to think about both their driving habits and their vehicle’s visibility before heading out on Halloween.
Slow Down and Expect the Unexpected
Children focused on reaching the next house may not be watching traffic. They can step out between parked cars, cross in unexpected places, or suddenly turn back toward a parent or friend.
Reduce your speed in residential areas and watch both sides of the street. Take extra care near intersections, driveways, and vehicles stopped to pick up or drop off passengers. Put your phone away and give the road your full attention.
Check Your Lights Before Heading Out

Before Halloween evening, take a few minutes to check your headlights, taillights, brake lights, and turn signals. Have someone help you check the brake lights while the vehicle is parked.
Clean dirt from the headlight lenses and make sure your windshield is clean inside and out. If your headlights seem unusually dim or you’re struggling to see clearly at night, have the cause checked.
Turn your headlights on as daylight fades, and confirm that your vehicle’s exterior lights are actually on. Don’t assume an illuminated dashboard means your taillights are working.
Check Your Wipers Before Rain Arrives
Rain can make it harder to spot pedestrians after dark, so check your windshield wipers before heading out. If they leave streaks, skip across the glass, or have cracked or torn rubber, replace them. Check your rear wiper too, if your vehicle has one.
Top off your windshield washer fluid and make sure your defroster clears fogged windows. If rain reduces visibility while you’re driving, slow down and leave extra space between vehicles. Keep your headlights on low beam, and watch carefully for trick-or-treaters near the road.
Make Sure Your Horn Works
Your horn can help alert someone to an immediate danger. Before heading out, briefly test it while parked in a safe location. If it sounds weak or doesn’t work, have it checked.
Use your horn only when needed to warn of danger. Avoid honking to greet trick-or-treaters or get your children’s attention—it can startle them and cause an unexpected movement.
Be Especially Careful When Backing Up
Before moving your vehicle, check for children nearby. Back out slowly and continue checking your surroundings as you move.
Use your mirrors and look around the vehicle yourself, even if you have a backup camera or parking sensors. If you cannot clearly see whether your path is clear, stop and check before continuing.
Buckle Up Between Every Stop
If you’re driving between neighborhoods or Halloween events, make sure everyone is properly buckled before the vehicle moves—even for a short trip.
Children should ride in the appropriate car seat or booster seat. Plan a safe place to park so your family can get out away from moving traffic, and check for pedestrians and bicycles before opening doors.
Texas DPS also reminds Halloween drivers to slow down, eliminate distractions, buckle up, and arrange a sober ride if drinking is part of their plans.
Help Your Trick-or-Treaters Stay Visible
For families traveling on foot, visibility matters. Add reflective tape to costumes or treat bags and bring flashlights or glow sticks.
Use sidewalks and crosswalks where available. Remind children to stop and look before crossing, and avoid masks that restrict their vision. An adult should accompany younger children and help them navigate driveways and street crossings.
Give Vehicle Concerns Attention Before Your Evening Plans
A burned-out light, streaking windshield wipers, or a brake concern deserves attention before you head into busy neighborhood streets.
If you’ve noticed a problem with your vehicle’s lighting, visibility, or braking, Chimney Rock Car Care can help identify what needs attention and explain your repair options.
Whether you’re trick-or-treating in Bellaire, visiting friends in West University, or driving through neighborhoods near the Galleria, watch for families crossing streets and children stepping out from between parked cars.
